As I was walking through the Huntington gardens I saw these birds on top of a tree. Couldn't get a good clear shot of them and the sky was very overcast and grey. I've never seen these before but I was really attracted to their Elmo "do". They are native to southern Asia, Pakistan, and southern China. They were introduced into North America and Australia as caged birds and many escapees have found their way to Florida, Hawaii, and California. And they love to sing!
That is so interesting....I did a double take when I read your title because that was a common term for referring to singing birds in Turkish....the word actually has the two dots on top of both u sounds, which makes it a softer sound (I am not sure that sound exists in English!)... looked it up, and Wikipedia says that bulbul derives from Persian, and means nightingale....fascinating how words evolve from one language to another...and, I love this photo of the two birds facing each other!!
This is such an artistically beautiful photo, I'm amazed it's not on the PP! I also found Osia's @panthora addition to the information fascinating. To mention a nightingale brings to my mind a Persian illustration...the sort of thing I might have read about in my childhood. How lovely to see them, and I'd love to hear their song!
