In the late 1850's, David Locke built Knights Ferry's first flour mill. It was destroyed by the flood of 1862, and a new mill was built here by David Tulloch in 1863.
A dam upstream diverted water to a water wheel which turned the millstone.
Before the turn of the century, Charles Tulloch, David's son, converted the flour mill into a hydroelectric plant. This plant provided electrical power for the surrounding countryside until the late 1920's.
There are lots of old flour mills around the world that look like this! Sad ruins. That sun is rather bright and well shot so as not to blur the surrounds!
You photographed this so beautifully, and it reminds me of a painting I saw back in NS. Now I'll have to look for the photo I took of the gallery works (painted by a couple of good friends...)
