Meadow Foxtail grass by julienne1

Meadow Foxtail grass

I love to watch the wide variety of grasses progress through their various stages of flowering this time of year. This Foxtail grass first of all opens feathery white female stigmas like in the spike at the front. The feathery fronds trap pollen from the air to fertilise their own egg cells. Later on the same spike will produce the male stamens to release pollen into the air like the spikes in the background - and their pollen will fertilise other plants. I find this all fascinating ... but then I don't suffer from hay fever!
Fascinating, and I love how it looks dusty...

@shirleybankfarm - it's very similar to Timothy grass and often mistaken for it. The difference is the time of year - Timothy flowers in June

@shirleybankfarm - I found this website that talks about the differences if you're interested, http://www.christian-ecology.org.uk/grass5-alopecurus-pratensis.htm

@woofandweft1 - I think foxtail is one of the major culprits for grass related hay-fever! It's a horrible allergy isn't it.

@julienne1 Thank you for the information Julienne, I never knew there was the two grasses that were so alike. My day has not been wasted, I have learnt something :)
