Robin's pincushion

These weird colourful growths, or bedeguar galls, on wild roses are caused by a gall wasp. The wasp lays eggs on a developing leaf and when the grub hatches it feeds on the leaf and secretes a chemical which causes the abnormal growth. These galls don't seem to affect the whole rose bush and they do look rather pretty!
How fascinating, this is probably the only instance I would be happy with an insect invasion!
