Hemideina Megacephala... Large-Headed Weta...

This is our Native New Zealand Weta.. Found Nation wide in rotting tree's and logs and in my fire wood,, This little guy was hanging about this morning so I have liberated him to safety.. The poor little Weta gets a bit of bad press as they are a bit prehistoric and scary looking but if you don't bite them they will not bite you.. This guy is the average 2 inches long body and the antennae are about 4 inches long which they wave about in a defensive manor .. They are in the same family group as Crickets..
oh good for you for saving him. Personally they scare me but you are so right-they are allowed to live as much as us. Wonderful shot.

He looks happy to be free again - not the best place to hide in amongst the firewood…… Brave you!

Love the weta. I was in NZ recently and was given one made out of copper wire. I put it on the wall in our guest loo, but husband said it was too realistic and made me remove it! Anyway, love your photo and it's a fav for me.
