Valentine Day 2 by jyokota

Valentine Day 2

First, a big thank you for the get-pushed challenge from @johnnewman to practicing playing with aperture to capture motion. I posted what I thought was the best version of this photo on my regular 365 album and many of you made kind and generously supportive comments that I appreciate sincerely.

Sometimes, we get serendipitous opportunities to have shared moments (or hours, given the 5 hour delay sitting on the runway + the 6 hour NY-London flight time). For some reason, I introduced myself to the man sitting next to me because he very kindly put my heavy bag in the overhead bin as I am very short and was struggling with it (could it have been the camera, 4 lenses, flash, etc.?) Turns out he's from Croatia, and I had been to Zagreb last summer. He started showing me his Zagreb photos on his iPad. I was amazed! He was professional -- although he kept saying he was a brain surgeon (true story). Absolutely beautiful photography. I sat in awe. So, what does an enterprising 365er do in a situation like this with an expert photographer as captive audience for hours? Yup, I did. I had him look at my photos while I put him through an inquisition, asking for feedback. He generously critiqued my photos, gave tips, etc. I even took notes on my computer!

The reason I'm posting this photo as an alternate to the one I posted earlier is that he liked the way that the door shapes were evident whereas the other one the train was moving so fast it almost looks like a wall blur. There was another shot that was in between the two, and best of the train blur-but-shaped but the guy also turned out a bit blurry. In this one, the emotional intensity is immediately apparent.

Lucky me to get a private tutorial!

Lucky you, indeed! And now that you've posted this one, I agree with him - although I'd never have been able to offer that kind of advice.
Enjoy your time away!

Thanks, Carol. I just learned about "merge/do something opacity" in photoshop from @musicguy1982 so if I had photoshop I probably could merge the in between blur page with this sharp version of the guy with the flowers.

Agree, this a better shot, you've managed to capture movement perfectly as well as getting the platform nicely in focus. I think it's fair to say you've successfully completed the challenge :)

I like this one much better! The other was good, but this is excellent.

Yep -- this one is the better of the two for all the reasons you described, but as others have said, I don't think I would have known enough to offer the critique that others did. What a lucky turn of events for the delayed flight!

Good for you that you managed to try different settings. Yes I like the definition of the train better here. Interesting what a change of f-stop can do.
p.s. I 'm jealous of your flight companion.
