In 2008, I was supposed to go to Haiti for a week to work on a book-making class with teachers. Days before, it became clear that I could not go, but my husband went in place instead (we often subbed for each other). He was fascinated by his experiences there, and he brought back this bus and told stories of how many people could get on them at once.
I naively thought I could just snap a few photos and be done today -- but the lighting was a challenge and I had to work with a cap draped over a light to make it work. Then all the photos I took were too tight and the bar seemed confusing -- unless I included more of the background so you could tell it was an architectural element rather than an unexplainable bar. The bus and book are on the floor of the upper level of the library, and the photo was taken by standing on a chair on the lower level of the library.
You sure managed a wonderful shot here. Love the colours and lighting. We have taxis (just not so colourful) where there are four rows with five to six passengers and all their goods in one row. Amazing to see them crawl out. Ps. it would have been great if your husband would have taken a shot of you during your preparation ;-)
I have such wonderful memories being at your home Junko and someone said have you seen the library? I was thinking a few shelves of books and little did I know what a magical wonderland I would enter! I was blown away by how fabulous it was. I have some photos but none show how great it is! One day Junko I will get back to Chicago!
you have a multi-level library in your home? at some point might you consider a full room shot to give us some context? this is such a delightful bit of memorabilia btw...
Had I not seen your library, I think your narrative would be a bit confusing, but I KNOW what you are talking about. And I am rather thankful that my daughter and I visited it with your husband as a guide before we left your home.
@darylo I chuckled -- an English teacher through and through, you are! Yes, it's a confusing narrative. Did you know some of us are doing the 30 days of the same object? I chose Home Library which is a very broad one but something I have never photographed! (PS. Tips for clarification of narrative welcome)
I see I didn't get around to a comment... You're a book binder? Book artist? Artist's Books?! I was actually dreaming about that last night...having to give a talk about how my artistic interests progressed! Do you suppose some of this was niggling inside my brain? I'd love to know more about that aspect of your interests!
It worked!! I really like this a lot -- great colors and it captures the range of artifacts you have collected that are such a part of the books in the library. Great choice.
