I must start by saying THANK YOU to so many for all your comments and fav's. This has been a great week for me. Two of my shots are on the TT right now and my Grizzly picture from yesterday has an incredible 70+ fav's after 24 hours! I couldn't resist sharing a few more shots from the grizzly tour on Sunday. This is the same momma from yesterday right before she caught the fish that the twins were fighting over, in yesterday's other shot.
In case you didn't see it yesterday, there was a news reporter on the trip and the story ran on the news last night. I'm at the very end sitting on the ground with the grey sweater looking through my camera. Here's the link: http://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=445012
I love that here on 365 you get the chance to photograph Grizzly Bears and we get to see your photos - just stunning. Every single FAV is hugely deserved - and another FAV for this one.
Oh you took a proper lens with you! I'll have to watch the film again with the sound on. We went to see the Grizzlies from Telegraph Cove about 3 years ago. Best holiday ever - we had orcas go right under our kayaks as well. It is definitely on my list to go again and when the kids are both off to uni we will go in September so that the salmon are running. Great photos of a great experience!
@judithg I took my 50-500 lens with me. I really don't like it but it did the job. I just had my monopod and probably should have brought my tripod... next year!
@amandal It seriously was like being on National Geographic. At one point there were 7 bears on the same river bank. I truly lucked out. Not only did I not have to pay but they said it was probably their best trip of the season so far. The bears were most definitely the highlight but the 7 orcas and 150 dolphins really were the icing on the cake!
Oh goodness gracious me.......fancy seeing this grizzly bear in the wild ......did you feel safe? Fabulous shot & we are so lucky to see this through your eyes! Fave
@kwind You should share some of your photos with them. Great for advertising their tours. Did they hire you for that? Sheesh, boy howdy, you sure did luck out!
@happypat We were amazingly close but surprisingly I felt safe. We were not allowed to eat outside of the bus and we had to stay together in a large group (there were about 20 people) and whisper only. There was one point when a large bear grabbed a fish and jumped up the bank and disappeared into the woods. I wondered for a second where he might go. The bear people were on either side of us watching the woods. They had bear spray, not that it would have been powerful enough if one of the bears really wanted us. They said that the river is very healthy and the bears are returning in great numbers. It is believed that the mommas we saw were once cubs here and probably viewed by humans. They are now teaching their cubs we are "safe". They seem to go about their business unaware that we were even there. It was breathtaking!
@melanierivers I didn't win a contest. My family has gone on several of their different tours over the years and we have referred and brought many people along with us. I always take my camera and then share my photos, which they have bee using to advertise on their FB page. It doesn't hurt that one of the employees is my best friend's sister. They called me up the night before and said they had an extra seat and wanted to give it to me as a thank you. I graciously accepted! Check out this shot from our rapid tours in July... http://365project.org/kwind/365/2014-07-13
I enjoyed watching the video. You live in an amazingly beautiful part of the world. Congrats on double TT - you are really knocking them out of the park these days! A big fav for this one.
Loved following the different links you gave - your photos are absolutely incredible. What an amazing experience to be a part of. They sure did themselves a favor by offering you this trip - those photos alone should be worth thousands in attracting tourists to use them in the hope of seeing what you saw. Fav
This is an absolutely fantastic capture. I love the action of the bear and that you can see the fish trying to get away. The plot splashdown is nice too. Definite fav!
The shots you have posted the past few days have been phenomenal, all of the favs and comments are more than deserved. Any of us would have loved to do this trip, but not all of us would have been able to document it so well. Huge Fav!
Absolutely brilliant photo! The color, the action, the clarity — just amazing. I have to wonder if I'd be shaking so much with the excitement of the moment that all my images would come out blurry. Thank goodness it's you doing the shooting. Thanks for sharing the link to the video and the tour's FB page. Amazing videos and pictures there, including yours. Congrats on being featured on their site.
Hey Kim! All I can say is "Holy Crap!!!!!" You were way too close for me!!! I lived in Alaska for many years and was always wary (and scared) of bears. Had one sort of follow me up to our house as I got out of the car. Didn't know it was there until it growled. Ever since, I just like OTHER people's photos!! This is just fantastic and I would have to frame this and hang it in a gallery some where!!!! Huge FAV!!
Congrats on the TT Page, it is so well deserved!!!
Huge kudos for your amazing photos.... I did check out the FB page (although NOT a FBer) and your first shot of the bear, in profile, in the water, is also beautiful - wonderful light in that shot. This shot, also so fab. Wonderful! :)
This photo captures the action - the bear, the salmon , the splash! What an awesome day that must have been! Thanks for sharing the adventure through your marvelous wildlife photos! I love them!
@kwind Outstanding shots Kim. I watched the video from CTV and my first thought when I saw the people in the observation platform was ..."Box Lunch!" LOL!!!!
I'm so happy for you. Your photos of this excursion really are tremendous, what a great karma day! This is one of my favourite of all time Grizzly photos, amazing. Just stellar work.
Congrats on the TT Page, it is so well deserved!!!
