Ascension Day - The Bisley Wells by ladymagpie

Ascension Day - The Bisley Wells

Popped up to Bisley to take this shot today while they were preparing for an important village ceremony.

Today is Ascension Day and in the village of Bisley in The Cotswolds all the families and local school children have a service and parade to the famous wells behind a brass band to decorate the wells with flowers. The ceremony started in 1863 by the Rev.Thomas Keble who had restored the wells.

It is up to the 22 eldest children from the village school to decorate these wells, interestingly the church and more importantly the graveyard is just above these wells and it could be an offering to the souls of their departed that are being blessed in the water coming out of the hillside.

Can I suggest reading the following link.
