I do have many interests and hobbies but it's so nice when you can combine some of them. A few of you know I have a collect of Doulton Lambeth Pottery and yet another interest I enjoy is genealogy, have traced my Cook family back to 1600. I may be retired now but I don't seem to have much time in the day, I do wonder how I used to go out to work.
I recently purchased a christening mug made by Doulton and it was for a girl called Marjorie Phillips who was born on the 18th September 1916. Before it arrived I started the genealogy work and found out she was born in the seaside town of Worthing in Sussex. I order a copy of her birth certificate to confirm my findings. (It's not cheap in the UK).
Her Father was a soldier called Frank William Phillips and the Mother was Mary Alice (nee Begent), pleased to say he made it through the First World War. I can trace their families back but haven't found out what happened to Marjorie yet. Did she marry, has she past away as she would be 98 now, the search continues.
I think keeping busy, like you do, with so many interests and hobbies, is so much better than being bored. I look forward to your interesting story and unusual composition.
Fascinating story - we passed through East Preston this afternoon! There is an East Preston Parish Council, maybe they could shed some light on Marjorie.e: epparishcouncil@btconnect.com website: http://eastpreston.arun.gov.uk/main.cfm
Fascinating hobby. I think I'll call you Sherlock Holmes as you're hunting down mysteries. Guess you'll need to change to a deerstalker. Such a lovely christening mug.
That would be fascinating - genealogy. My maiden name is Perry and I have traced it back a bit but that sort of hobby is really frustrating too. I love the photo of the British birth certificate - just like mine! It is the envy of all my Canadian friends with their little laminated cards ;-)
What a fabulous marriage of two of your hobbies. Our surname is French Huguenot. My husband has traces his family back to the Medway Valley in the mid 17th century.
That;s fascinating. She must have been a very wanted baby and have two very well respected parents to have such a personal christening mug. You leave me wanting more!
This is very impressive that you could search and own this wonderful part of history. I have tried to go back on my family and found they were from Switzerland on my moms side and were cabinet makers. Now I know why my grandfather was such a good carpenter. But can;t seem to go very far back on my father. It is fun to do but also a challenge for sure. FAV photo.
