Times have changed over the years in England with a decline in those who attend church. In my childhood my parents made us dress up smartly and attend this local church every Sunday. The rest of the day we were not allowed out to play and only allowed to venture into the garden still in our best clothes. What is annoying is that my Patents didn't go to church either.
Today when you see the congregation going in and out the majority are elderly to middle aged. I love to pass churches where the West Indies people pray and sing their hearts out, the music is so cheerful and enjoyable and draw people in, I think I would love to join them.
This is in fact the church where we went, at one time I was in the choir and rang a single bell in the tower before the service. Both my Brother and Sister were married here. A Wonderful old church with many old gravestones and memories.
what a lovely church, but sad to hear about the older congregation. you are welcome to join us at our church where that average age is young, lots of prayer and singing modern and older songs.
A lovely composition - Fav I was made to go to church on Sundays but my parents did go as well. My father played the organ and like you, we were not allowed out to play! Memories
Lovely church, Heather. I have the same memories about going to church when we were kids. Reading books on Sundays, keep our clothes clean, visits to aunts and uncles we didn't like et cetera....Fav.
Yes. My Sundays were pretty much the same as yours. I like it when I pop into our local church now people are wearing casual clothes and sing their hearts out. A lot jollier and inclusive.
Funny, I was one of the declining middle-aged that attended here this morning. My brother was married here too. Scarey but as you were taking the front I was round the back this afternoon. Wanted to view the low cloud over the hills.
Your image and comments take me back Heather. In the 60s when I went home to NI mum would get a hat and gloves ready for me to wear to services! No excuses allowed. Sadly she has trouble getting up and down now and so can't stand for the hymns so seldom goes now. I'm sure she misses it as it was the centre of her life.
