I've always been told that I have a very vivid imagination which I think you can tell from me little stories. Today I'm going back to my childhood and when I told my Mother what I had been doing, I did perhaps exaggerate with my reply. She would think for a minutes and then say "Are you telling me porkies, you know what happens when you tell porkies".
Well I didn't actually but where does the phrase come from. Most English members will know it comes from the Cockney slang of Pork Pies - Lies. and is probably from my Father's family who were Cockneys born in Lambeth and within the sound of Bow Bells.
Now I decided to put the phrase to a test and went to talk to these pigs at a nearby farm, not only Doctor Dolittle talks to the animals you know. Every time I told them some truths nothing happened, but when I told them a lie they grunted out loud.
Now then, am I telling porkies this time. Thanks for all your comments recently.
Telling porkies, I haven't heard that phrase for years! I had no idea it came from cockney slang! I really like pigs, we used to have a few a long time ago & I remember sitting up with them when they farrowed.
Wonderful story, Pigs are great to converse with!! I would always talk to my Aunts Goose when at the Farm! and stop with the Porkies... well just little ones...lol
