We are back in the High Street of Stonehouse and looking at one of the oldest buildings in the town. It's estimated that it was built in the mid 16th century, so about 1550, made as a timber framed cottage with a cross gabled end.
It's unusual as it's sat between a large two story butchers shop that you can see the end wall, and a modern supermarket. There is no possible chance of this beautiful building being removed as it's grade 2 listed, thankfully.
Another unusual thing about this building is it's use over the years. When I was young doing a paper round I can remember an old lady living here, and I used to speak to her as she tended her garden behind, now a carpark for the supermarket.
It was sold many years later and became a solicitors office. I know this because I had to own up and sign a declaration in front of a solicitor, I couldn't spell a certain word, to which my solicitor said, if you can't spell it you shouldn't have done it. Don't worry it wasn't anything illegal.
Today it's your Tandoori takeaway, lovely smells circulating around the area, which would make this house a place not to be sniffed at. Well I wonder what the builders back in the 1500's think of this use today, they wouldn't of known what tandoori was.
