It's kick out Thursday again, and Lady Magpie has to fly the nest whilst the cleaners take over and fluff up the twigs and feathers in my nest, well you know what I mean, So after a little shop I set off down one of our five valleys to capture a few pictures for you to enjoy.
This is the canal roundhouse dating from 1790 and was lived in by a Canal Lengthman. This person looked after a length of the canal for a good distance either side of the house. When these where built the roofs were concave so they collected rainwater, the only source of water for the family.
It still had three floors, the two you can see below the roof and at the back there is another lower floor where the bank drops away. This is where the Lengthman kept his horse to take over pulling the barges along. It was still a very small home for a full family.
The land you can see in front is actually the overgrown canal, so different to the restored parts I’ve shown you recently. There is still a lot of work to restore the canal in this area, but although they are working hard I don't think I will see this part with barges floating by.
The whole of this area is beautiful and today I found many lovely places to show you.
That’s such a beautiful old roundhouse…..would have been a squash but I would guess quite a good life for a family. Loved the idea of the concave roof…what a stroke of genius!
