Glen Davis Oil-Shale retort by leggzy

Glen Davis Oil-Shale retort

Saturday we took a tour of the old oil-shale mine at Glen Davis, which has been closed since the early 1950's. There were so many photo opp's at this place that it was extremely hard to choose one for that day! There were amazing ruins everywhere....but I've chosen this one of the retort, as it really stood out on the landscape & was ultimately where the shale was put in at the top & would come out the bottom as oil/petrol. Fascinating stuff!
Really cool looking building, great textures and tones, excellent shot!

To think that such a massive building was build out there a long way from any main towns. Very imposing & great shot.

I can hardly believe this is New Zealand. You have been captured a few very interesting sceneries of South Island

@yaorenliu - sorry, Not New Zealand, I am in Australia. I have previously posted some NZ photos though....but not this one :)

@365projectorgjenfurj @dishaparekh176 Thank you both for your lovely comments. Yes Jen - out in the middle of nowhere...but the old shale mine is the reason the town was built - it had a population of 2500 at one point.

I really like your composition of this picture and the contrasting colours of the brick work, the sky and the grass. Such an unusual looking structure, I wonder what will become of it...
