Also known as The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Amiens.
Amiens cathedral is the largest of the Gothic cathedrals of its type in France. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first cathedral on the site was destroyed by fire and the building now standing on the site was started in 1220 and most of the main construction was finished about 1270. During WW1 thousands of sandbags were placed inside the cathedral to protect it from shell damage. Apparently they did the same during WW2.
Lucky for us it still stands today. It is a stunning cathedral both inside & out. I preferred Amiens Cathedral to Notre Dame in Paris - I think because it had such beautiful lighting inside, whereas Notre Dame I found to be very dark.
Using an older pic for today's church shot, from my trip to France's WW1 battlefields last year, with Amiens being one of our stays for 3 nights.
I think I've been to this cathedral (or it could have been a cathedral with a façade just like this). I agree it is very beautiful both on the outside and on the inside and yes there is more light in this one than in the Notre Dame of Paris. A wonderful capture of this façade.
Oh I love cathedral's...when I was a young girl I wanted to be married in a cathedral with a pipe organ (my dad played the pipe organ and I miss him and the sound of that beautiful instrument). Beautiful capture.
I remember studying this cathedral in art history. And although I've never seen it in person, I could tell from the pictures that it was stunning. Beautiful capture.
