Mud Church by leggzy

Mud Church

Another church that I haven't been able to find out it's name, but I did manage to find out a bit of its history.

This old crumbling church is at a place called Trajere (pronounced Tradg-er-y), about 10km south of a little town called Eugowra - well known for its bush ranger history. It is basically sitting in the middle of a paddock, in the middle of nowhere....and sadly is crumbling away :(

I got brave & went through the gates that were wired together & got to see it up close. It appears that the render that was covering the mud bricks has fallen away over the years. (that is the white bit you can see at the top, near the roof). Without the render, it has left the mud bricks exposed to the elements, and the bricks now appear to be all molded together as one solid mud wall - I assume that being constantly weathered by the rain has caused this. I touched part of the wall with my hand & it was very dry & crumbly. There were no windows or doors...just the timber frames that once held the window panes & wooden doors. Inside - my gosh, what a mess! I think that sheep must sometimes be in this paddock & they most likely shelter inside the church!!! shock-horror!! I did take a couple of shots inside that I plan to share after my month of churches is finished. Who knows how long this beauty will last....hopefully for a few more years to come! Ideally, this would be lovely to shoot in the late afternoon, with the sun lighting the front & side - I will have to try to go out there again some time to capture it at that time :)

Built in 1904 as a Church and School it served a very strong Seventh Day Adventist group who were setters on nearby properties. Although the families who attended have moved away from the area, over the years their faith produced, it is believed, six ordained ministers and three missionary nurses. There have been reunions held by families of the original worshipers and the Church often is featured as a backdrop for wedding photographs. The building is on private property which is owned by the Herbert family today.

I drove a 250km round trip today seeking out churches! Call me crazy - I think I'd agree!! lol
I didn't find too many, so that was a bit disappointing.
Wouldn't it be nice to see it restored to it's former beauty. I love the simplicity. Beautiful cloudscape as well :)

What a fascinating history to go with this gorgeous shot. Pity it is being allowed to fall apart.

That's a hell of a trip and shows such dedication. I think this was well worth the effort. Although it is looking tired and very sorry for itself it is still a beauty. Such a shame that it is crumbling away. But you've preserved it through your photography so well done to you. Easy fav. Oh, nice bit of history too :)

What a great find and some lovely history, it would be so good if someone chose to restore this but I guess its too far in the back of beyond for that to happen.

Such an interesting history and a beautiful little church. A real shame it is in need of some TLC. Love the sky and the remoteness of it. Well done for driving so far to find it! Look forward to seeing the interior photos.
