"These people live again in print as intensely as when their images were captured on old dry plates of sixty years ago... I am walking in their alleys, standing in their rooms and sheds and workshops, looking in and out of their windows. And they in turn seem to be aware of me." Ansel Adams
When I came across this quote today I felt like it had been written about this image. When my brother visited me last weekend, he brought two really huge boxes of my father's 'Box Brownie' negatives, taken exactly 60 years ago - when my father was briefly a professional photographer. I bought a large format film scanner last week so we could set up a bit of a production line, but we only managed to scan about 50 of the hundreds of negatives.
This is my Mother, who never learnt to swim & was absolutely terrified of boats. My father must have taken this while courting her, - the look in her eyes shows no fear at all.
Today I hand tinted the shot in the style of the times, but have not rescanned or re-touched the image (even though I wanted to!).
I love this shot because of the coquetish expression, and I think it is the most 'artistic' shot I have seen of my pop's so far..... so... that's what I was doing on the 19th October 2011!
@nicolecampbell You are probably right - while trying to look cool in front of her new boyfriend! I have never met anyone as scared of the water as she was. She could not even watch her children swim, and we had to teach ourselves.
