I have placed a B&W layer at 30% opacity on top of the coloured background layer because I could not find the sepia tone I wanted, and it really accentuated the clouds, giving me far more control with than simply applying desaturation, or a sepia filter. (better viewed with black background)
Thanks everyone for your amazing response to my liquid rainbow shot! :))
Love the contrast between the two trees, and the processing is excellent..
I stumbled across the b&w layer technique by accident, and use it frequently now in various different ways. Very handy for adjusting contrast with a degree of subtlety in dodge / burn mode.
@automaticslim :) I had never thought of it before today, but it makes so much sense really! Now I can think of lots of different ways it could be used....in this shot it is a bit like instant split-toning !
I love learning from you, so sincerely appreciate your technical descriptions. Now if I can just SOMEDAY get more comfortable with layers in the first place. . . sigh!
@lyno stick at it Lyn - I think it took me about 18 months of using layers before I had any real idea of what I was doing.... & then one day it just clicked!! One of the great benefits of 365 is there is plenty of opportunity for practice. :) Thanks for the encouraging feedback, & I am always happy to share.
