The only brown object I felt enthusiastic about shooting today was chocolate - and perhaps that was not such a good idea as I have recently become lactose intolerant! (ohh how to ignore the smell of a freshly opened packet of chocolate????)
Food styling is a lot trickier than it looks - I'd get it set up & be happy with the composition but not the lighting, and it didn't help that my caramel bar had very little caramel Mr Cadbury!!
The other challenge I faced is learning to compose for a square image output - I had not realised how automatically my brain defaults to 2x3 when looking at objects!
That looks amazing and as another lactose intolerant person it's driving me wild that I can't eat it as well. There is some reasonable dairy free chocolate available but nothing that I've found that matches Cadbury's for taste. :(
@nicolecampbell & @missmercy I have had problems since a bout of gastro in Bali last year - hopefully the enzyme production will repair over the next few months, but it has been an interesting experience having to think before eating anything, and giving up blue cheese has been the real hardship for me! The smell of the chocolate was just awsome...
@bu11et I use a white poster sized piece of card from the newsagent - about $3, & I have used it a lot - place the object on a curve of the card ( a bit like the placement at http://www.clouddome.com/store/photo_backgrounds.shtml, but I just used a bottle of detergent behind the card) so there is no 'horizon'. The white also helps to reflect the light from the flash. You might need to take a few test shots to check your white balance if you are shooting in JPG. I also use a $2 KMart desk lamp (fitted with a daylight fluoro bulb) placed at 45 degrees to provide extra light - wow I sound like the last of the big spenders !! ?? I hope that makes sense?
Nice shot. Interesting that you find square challenging; this site forced me to use that format more often to make sure my subject was in the thumbnail.
