I've seen butterflies flying around with huge chunks of wing missing and wondered how they are still able to fly.

From what I can see here, I would ID this as a male Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Milanie. I have seen a lot of ragged butterflies around here the past few years too. Nice light in this capture.
