Last month, I posted a photo of a lynx spider but that one was more green. This one is a beautiful yellow-orange!
It's about 1cm (0.3in). Lynx spiders are like the crab spider I posted yesterday. They do not spin webs. They are agile and hunt their prey, usually by using the wait-and-pounce approach. It's easy to identify the lynx spider, apart from the long spines on its legs: Look at its eyes. A lynx spider has 8 eyes with 6 of them arranged in a distinctive hexagonal shape.
If you like, view the large version for more details. 8)
Fantastic capture ... I think that he is so cool and the detail is awesome. Yet, I don't like his scary gaze and the fact that he "pounces!" STILL ... it's in incredible capture and I applaud you loud and long for that!
Wow! That's a very colorful spider, Livia! Fantastic focus and details! The green leaf makes is stand out so well. Interesting info in your narrative, too. Excellent work!
spikey legs and eight eyes - got his defences well sorted! I think I need to improve my vocabulary to find new ways to say how much I enjoy your photos and the info you bring us Livia :)
OMG those eyes.... yikes! So, if six of them are on the top in a hexagon, where are the other two? This is so cool! I really love his long striped body, but the legs are way creepy... another amazing shot!!
hehe.......i always love what you write. I wish I was creative with words like you are......he does look like a cactus, you are so right!!
are those his eyes, way up on the top middle of his head? as spiders go, this guys is handsome;)
Now that you've described it with spiky legs and eight eyes I feel like I've got a major splash of arachnophobia..I'll go look at a snake to wash it away! Another fantastic shot Livia, brilliant details!!
Amazing capture. Looks a bit nasty. As if he went to the Spider Surplus store looking to upgrade on his weapon systems. The clerk asks "Whatcha want Lynxie"
The Lynx focuses a few eyes on the clerk, and in a dry voice like crinkled wrapping paper, says...."All of it"
@pjonas The other two eyes are smaller ones below the front-facing eyes. 8)
@maggiemae Mostly I find them in tall grass or on plants in the park. They're so small, they're hard to see. But if you go looking for them, you'll find them. I usually have no idea what I'm shooting until I look at my photos, then I try to identify the insect or spider by browsing local nature blogs and by googling. As for steady hands, I don't think so, but I do try to beat the odds by taking 10-15 shots of the same subject. There are blurry photos in the lot... and then one or two that are sharp enough to show here. XD
@paulaag Yes, those are his eyes. You can see 6 of them arranged in a hexagonal shape. And then there are two more smaller ones (which you can't really see in my photo) below the front-facing ones. This spider has 8 eyes in total. I do agree with you, I think it's a handsome looking spider! Heh. I rarely see spiders that are orange in color. 8)
@losthorizon *LMAO* I can just imagine that scene! Awesome description! XD But, really, this one is tame looking. I've seen worse. Much worse. Legs and jaws like whoa. But no, I don't have photos of them because I was too scared to go close enough for shots! 8(
You find the most amazing bugs and have so many cool facts about them. I find a bug and title it 'Bug' and then have no idea how or what it does. Fantastic!!
Fantastic shot! Lovey detail in your capture of the pretty spider. I like how he can see in all directions at once! Very pretty patterns on his abdomen too :)
Livia, thanks for the comment on my bee post yesterday, most appreciated. This spider shot is nice, and even better it's shot freehand. I love your stated 'lack of ambition' approach to shooting ;-)
A great, big, not-so-spiny, brightly colored "THANK YOU!" to all for your time and kind comments! The more I see lynx spiders, the more I like seeing them. I hope to get more opportunities to shoot them. Thank you for your support. Please know that I am grateful. Thank you very much !
You don't say..eight eyes..oh..what does the spider need that many eyes for? and what about all those spines on the eight legs. that is if counted right..amazing closeup.

Nicely captured... sure has hairy legs!
