You always want to shoot a jumping spider from a head-on perspective because, for something so tiny (5mm), they have amazing, big, round eyes. Their eyes are their most attractive feature. But when you do that, you can't see the patterns and colors on them. So, with every jumper I see, I actually try to shoot from every angle possible. (Obsessed, much? XD )
This little guy (you might recognize him from Jumping Spiders Week) has beautiful white stripes running down both sides of his cephalothorax (let's just call it his head!) and abdomen.
And you can see from this shot another reason why jumping spiders are cuter than web-spinning spiders. They have big heads, small abdomens and short legs! Those are child- or doll-like proportions. Web-spinning spiders, on the other hand, tend to have small heads, bloated abdomens and too-long legs, characteristics which I have always found creepy. (Prejudiced, much? XD )
I have to ask, do you just have a backyard that has loads of these naturally? Or, do you have terrariums of them in your house? I do think they're cute!
@meisen325@yonnie@cdonohoue@kittikat@pyrrhula I think I could be the one to write a book from all that Livia has taught me about these guys since I joined 365! Great shot Livia and once again, thanks for all the information!
@msk1p2 Haha, I have no backyard (though I wish I did so I can grow stuff), I live in a small flat on the 5th floor. All my spider shots are made in the park, mangrove forest and nature reserve. I go out in the mornings to look for them. I don't always find them. It's a matter of luck. 8)
Gorgeous focus and wonderful perspective! I love all of your jumping spiders at any angle! They all just amaze me all the details and personality of such a little creature! FAV
You have certainly provided me with an education about spiders and have found some beauties. I look at them in a different light now ;-) This photo is fabulous!
A great, big, striped, cute and furry "THANK YOU!" to all! He's really tiny, and really fun to photograph. Thank you so much for stopping by and writing a comment. I hope, after all these jumping spider shots, even if you don't find them cute, that at least you won't find them outright scary or threatening. They really aren't.
oh, heavens, livia. where do you find these things? :-D love your perspective, but had i seen it myself, it'd have been swatted before i realize i should take a photo first. great shot.
Just keep them away from me. :)
(and yes... you are obsessed, but I'm enjoying all your shots and info!)
Again, thank you, I am grateful for your support!
