It's just registered in my consciouness that you live in Cornwall too. Up the other end though? It always amazes me how much the landscape here changes over such a small area. i love these gates too - I can't resist them!
@swilde - the gate only opens between the two posts. A person walks in, moves the gate across and then moves out the other side. The next person, moves into the gate, but before they can get out to your side you have them trapped for a quick kiss! Fun!
Actually the point is more practical. A person can stand between the posts while the gate swings across. An animal cannot. It avoids nasty 'gate open' escapes etc but allows free movement on paths. Another way of doing it is to use a style.
What you see in the foreground is the gate which swings only between the two posts. So you see, it is quite tight, but ample room for a person. Prams etc have to be passed over the top. Everything has its downside.
