The Helm grasps the steering oar

You have already been introduced to the drummer [ http://365project.org/netkonnexion/number03/2011-12-11 ]. Well, this is what the helm has to contend with! Standing up in an unstable boat where the rest of the crew control the stability is difficult enough. But to have to hold an oar, out over the side of the boat, is a precarious position. In sharp turns the person on the helm has to lean right out and push the oar. A sudden roll of the boat could pitch the helm over the side! Then the whole crew is in trouble.

As you can see the whole affair looks pretty precarious. Traditionally these boats were paddled in open sea. Some considerable teamwork and skill is needed for that.

Excellent shot!
