Damon, what exactly is this? I think I see in the reflection some mountains and a horizon on the lower segment, and then again it looks like a table setting with food on the upper segment.
Mm, yes. Good angle - enough of an angle and diagonal to impart a sense of of movement and power but not OTT.
I'm minded of a shark, or maybe salmon swimming up-river to spawn , or a crab/lobster claw reaching out. Lots for the imagination to enjoy.
I'm finding the lighter, elongated triangle across the top a little distracting, possibly because it's quite contrasty with the darker stripe below it but I do like those striae, I think they augment the dynamic of the scupture very well.
@mikegifford@dulciknit
This is a sculpture in a house of someone I know. Actually it stands in a window. Those are net curtains behind it. I just thought the new angle and the dynamic lines would add to the provocative aspect of the sculpture.
It does make a considerable difference.
Was it something you imagined before you took the photo? I usually have to physically rotate the object if possible, or the photo if not, before spotting something like that.
It was part of a depth of field exercise I was teaching. We were just shooting to get that in focus with the curtains out of focus. Afterwards I was a bit disappointed with the result of the shots I got considering what a wonderful sculpture it is. So just played around, tried rotation, inversion and messing with photoshop effects. Just bought things to mind and, as you said, became like a shark or some predator fish. Worked out reasonably well like this.
Indeed it did. Experimentation is always fun and mostly productive, if not on the spot then for future reference. Pre-planning is good but I think it's sensible to be receptive to after-the-event ideas. I find too that the physical act of taking a photo often stimulates my creativity and clarifies my thinking.
@dulciknit You: " I find too that the physical act of taking a photo often stimulates my creativity and clarifies my thinking." Yaay! to that. It is one of the most fun aspects of post processing.
