I'm a bit ambivalent about this image, but as I plan to go back there early tomorrow morning I thought I would post to see if anyone has any suggestions... I think perhaps it is too busy? too many elements?
I like it; the tree and clouds in the distance are striking. No arguing that it is busy though - can you get a shot that focuses in more on the boat docks? The repetition there could be an interesting shot from a different angle.
@nkawoods yup... i took one today and was going to post it, but.... ok, this is going to sound complicated... i really felt the other one had potential and i had several ideas of what i could do better and i'm hoping to get something out of it tomorrow morning... this one i'm not as crazy about, just not sure why... and that's why i chose to post it... clear as mud? ;p
I love the lighting! It does look busy...keep in mind what it is you want the viewer to see. I had to look hard at the stuff on the right before realizing they are covered boats. (?) I have to agree with the others that the tree, clouds and empty boat slips would simplify and add character to this image. I hope the lighting is this good in the morning! :)
Beautiful tones in this image too!
Every time I see pictures of snow it makes me sad. I haven't seen the snow in like 5 years and I really want to go find some. This is a gorgeous picture :D
I heard something by Scott Kelby (he is a photog & photoshop guru) a while back, if something makes you stop & go hmmm.. then there is a shot there waiting for you.You need to work all the angles to find it. and I have no doubt you will find it!
Well, I think you should just shout out for them to move the darn boats to clear up your picture!! Seriously all the elements are there for a great shot, but I too think you might have walked over to the left and gotten a great shot with superb dof on the jetty!!
I don't really feel your eye is drawn to any particular point in this shot and I agree about the boats on the right, couldn't determine what they were at first and they don't really add any interest. There is a shot to be had, good luck, hope I haven't spoken out of turn!
I can see 3 good shots in this: those interesting covered boats and the shiny water in front, the line of docks and the trees in the background. And the light on the snow in the branches of the tree! imho.
'Cool" shot but i think I would have leaned more towards taking the shot of the frozen docks and not the plastic covered boats on the right. but that is just me.LOVE the clouds in the distance.
I love it but I know exactly that frustration. I have one particular place I have photographed three times and not been able to capture what is in my minds eye. I'm not sure what it is...no boats no tree just the docks?
When I first looked at this I thought that it would be better if it didn't have the boats on the right, but after viewing large I agree with @humphreyhippo that it works much better viewed large.

Compositionally, I think it works better when viewed large. In the smaller view, it does feel a little cluttered.
