Bird of Paradise by onewing

Bird of Paradise

We have a bird of paradise plant in our front garden and in December and January when the weather was so hot and dry all the flowers died and left just the leaves. Today I noticed that one flower has sprung to life and a few more buds are appearing again. The background for this plant just showed the houses across the road, so my handy assistant David held a piece of black card behind the plant to make the background clear and not detract from the beauty of the flower. Bird of paradise are one of my favourite flowers.
Such an interesting flower!! Nice shot :) I have had a Bird Of Paradise for a few years now in a pot and it has never flowered. Late last year we put it in the ground so hoping for some flowers soon. Is late in the year when i would expect this to happen?

These flowers have always fascinated me but I bet that in their country of origin they are known simply as "weeds" ;o)

@missk Our bird of paradise seems to flower all year round. Once the flowers have died orff I cut them back with clippers and then another flower grows. It was only when it got very hot and dry in December that all the flowers died off and it has taken till now for them to recover.

@steampowered You could be right Paul. I seem to think they originate in South Africa, but not sure. As a matter of fact they could be considedred weeds here in Oz too. Very often anything which isn't native is sniffed at, but I like it. always been a bit of a rebel!
