Pumping Yabbies by onewing

Pumping Yabbies

This morning a group of us went for breakfast by the beach at Salamander Bay.

I spotted a group of men pumping yabbies to use as bait.

@huvesaker The gulls did hang around but the men won!!
January 22nd, 2014
@yaorenliu @beryl It wasn't really a fair contest though, the gulls didn't stand a chance.

I'd never heard of yabbles before either! Great word and great shot!

A great candid shot - well captured!

What an interesting shot - I didn't know what yabbies were, but have just watched the video - they look like some form of shrimp - I presume they are edible in their own right?

Love it... and learning about Yabbies is a plus!

A beautifully soft sea scape..........I had heard the word yabbies but now much more informed!! Something about a group like this on the beach......holiday feelings!

Love the opportunistic gulls, lovely candid image :-)
January 22nd, 2014
Wonderful image. I like the fact that the fellas are all heading in one direction and the gulls are going the opposite way.

@ginnykoppenhol Thanks Ginny. We learn so much on 365 don't we.
January 22nd, 2014
@dolphin Thanks Molly, I spotted these chaps as we were having breakfast at the reserve by the beach.
January 22nd, 2014
@iwatts Thanks Ian. Yes you can eat them. I think they are a kind of crayfish, lobster family. You can cook them on the barbie.
January 22nd, 2014
@sbolden Thanks Scott. That is one thing I love about 365, not only the photography, we learn so much about other countries too.
January 22nd, 2014
@happypat Thanks Pat. I think it is one long holiday here. Good to be retired. There were a group of about 30 of us at the reserve by the beach having a breakfast outing when I spotted these chaps pumping yabbies.
January 22nd, 2014
@hermann Thanks Sally. The gulls came second in this race though.
January 22nd, 2014
great shot Babs and you are educating the northern hemisphere as well!
January 22nd, 2014
@onewing Retirement takes up a lot of time I find Babs!!
January 22nd, 2014
great shot! love how you've got three men and three gulls!
January 22nd, 2014
Nice capture

@steampowered the gulls here try to look disinterested. Mind you most of them are, they are so well fed here I am surprised they can fly.

Lee
The guy with the bucket has the best job. good shot of them Babs.
January 23rd, 2014
@gamelee They did take it in turns to do the pumping. They were for a while before they sailed off in their tinny.
January 23rd, 2014
Punching Yabbies? How interesting!! We go clamming in a similar fashion (with a clam "gun')....they dig down so quickly into the sand. Are they like clams?? What a great shot!! And I like @steampowered observation...
January 23rd, 2014
@eyesmile They are pumping yabbies, not punching them. If you check out the youtube clip which I attached to Heidi's reply you will see that it is a pump that they use.

Yabbies are sort of like crayfish.

OMG I haven't done that for YEARS!!!
January 23rd, 2014
@bec2702 Good that this pic brought back memories.
January 23rd, 2014
Well I now have a new word to add to my vocabulary although I'm not sure how often I'll be able to slip it into conversation! Great candid shot Babs, love the gulls.
January 23rd, 2014
Lovely shot Babs, I haven't seen a pump like this for years. I last used one back in the last Ice Age for getting bait sand worms when I was a kid.

Another 365 lesson for which I am grateful! Great shot, cool composition!
January 24th, 2014
@paulaw You will have to bring it into the conversation with an Australian accent. "I've got a mate in Oz where they collect yabbies with what looks like a huge bicycle pump". There you are for starters.

@golftragic Thanks Marnie. Good to hear that it brought back memories. Thanks for dropping by and welcome to 365.
January 24th, 2014
@sunraye Thanks Raye. I never knew what yabbies were either until I came to Australia.
