War Memorial - Canberra by onewing

War Memorial - Canberra

We have been away for a few days and I am now on catch up.

Got back tonight from a 3 day trip to Canberra, mainly to see two exhibitions.

1 Gold and the Incas Exhibition at the National Gallery Canberra

2 Mapping our World Exhibition at the National Library of Canberra

We did lots of other things too as you will see from the photos. It has been a very busy 3 days and I will catch up with your photos and reply to your comments on my photos at the weekend.

This photo was taken shortly after our arrival in Canberra on Tuesday and it is a photo of the War Memorial.

What gorgeous lines! A wonderful shot with lovely perspective.

Beautiful lines and perspective, and great focus and detail. If you don't mind me saying, I think it would have looked better straightened using the lines on the floor, but that is just my opinion. Feel free to ignore.

Sounds wonderful Babs....some very grand buildings there too...your capital city so it must be a great place.

@steampowered Thanks Paul. It is a brilliant place and there are so many exhibitions on show, plus of course the Hall of Remembrance where one of my relatives name is engraved. He was on the HMAS Vampire during WW2 when it was bombed by a Japanese plane who was unloading his last bomb on the way home. Only 9 people were killed and my rellie was one of them. Bad luch eh!

@onewing Thanks Babs. Sad to hear of your relative but then would have it been worse to have been very badly injured instead? Or like my Uncle George who was captured at Singapore and lived (just) in prison camps until freed at the end of the war. Poor old Unc George was a very unusual man (mentally) ever after, until his death. One never knows does one?

@iwatts Thanks Ian. You could be right. This was taken from a balcony so the perspective is out slightly. We had just got back from 3 days in Canberra. Been a long few days as we did so much, so I just wanted to get photos on my 365 after being absent. I was too shattered to play with photos after downloading them. We had a long day yesterday. Tidbinbilla Deep Space Complex in the morning and then stops on the way home (500 km drive). I will play with it later if I use it again.

@happypat Always enjoy going to Canberra, but it does get a bit hot. 39 degrees every day we were there this time. It is very dry heat though so not too painful. Saw two brilliant exhibitions along with lots of other things too, so had a great time.

@steampowered I can relate to that, My Uncle Jack was in a Japanese prison camp and was never the same again. He was tortured, came home with no teeth and no finger or toe nails. It was 4 years before he could sleep in a bed again after he got home and used to wake up screaming every night for about 10 years after the war. The price of peace is very high sometimes.

Love the perspective Babs, Unfortunately the price of peace is very high and no one has learnt a lesson, the world remains in turmoil :-)

Beautiful POV!

@hermann Very true. Humans have been killing each other since time began and unfortunately, it isn't going to stop now. As long as you get people who want to control the world it will just keep going.

@sunraye Thanks Raye. The price of peace is very high. My husband was in the military for a very long time and we know lots of people who have been casualties of conflicts.

PTSD is the very real aftermath of war as your Uncle Jack found out. Wonderful war memorial Babs, and lovely to see blue sky!

@jackie8 Thanks Jackie A very emotional ceremony at 5 pm too. An RAAF chap gave a commentary of a chap killed in WW1 and then the piper played a lament, after that 3 people layed wreaths for the fallen in recent times and then they played the last post. Not a dry eye in the place.
I agree about PTSD know a few people with that problem. Not only in the armed forces though. We have a friend who was a forensic photographer in the police force out here and he suffers terribly from flash backs. He was involved with some dreadful murder cases and had to take awful photos. He says that photographing children was the worse thing. We don't tend to think of police force in all this do we.

@annied Thanks Annie. Missed seeing this. There are some new things at the War Memorial and the closing ceremony is fantastic now. They have got a new curator of the museum I believe.
@gamelee Thanks Lee. It really is a brilliant place, but you may need a packed lunch to get here.
