The mystery bush which I posted on here a couple of days ago has now got more ripened fruit on it and this juvenile female koel decided to risk eating the fruit.
Luckily it decided that it couldn't swallow the whole thing in one go, although it had a really good try and I nearly had heart failure watching it try.
@elaine55 Thanks so much for the fav Elaine. It was still a juvenile I think and didn't see me as a threat. Probably still a bit young to appreciate danger yet. @leestevo Thanks Lee Ann There was a male koel around too and they are all black, but he didn't stay around. @sunraye Thanks Raye I was pleased she stayed put long enough for me to get a decent shot of her. @888rachel It did get stuck and she tried to swallow it all in one, but luckily decided that it wasn't possible and coughed it back out again. @yaorenliu I was worried she would get the fruit stuck, but she managed to shake it out and picked a smaller fruit instead. @hermann A bit too much optimism I think @beryl Thanks Beryl, they really are beautiful birds. Quite big too about 45 cm I reckon. I think they are cuckoo family.
@mcmary@annied@cljs@jennyheath@tesssa@dmward@libertylady Thanks. It came back today for another go at the fruit. Managed to eat it a bit at a time today though, so got the hang of it eventually. She brought a male koel with her too, but he wasn't as brave so couldn't get a decent photo of him.
@happypat@joeyc@paulaw@jackie8@eyesmile Thank you all so much. I was really worried that it was going to choke on this fruit, it had a good try at swallowing it, but it just wouldn't go down.
We are lucky that we get some really beautiful birds in our area. I do hate to see birds in cages in Australia, especially when they can live in the wild. Whenever I see a bird in a cage I always want to set it free.
Thanks for the fav too Gena.
Like you, I hate birds (or any other wild creature) behind bars or in a cage. I love your photo, and the caption made me chuckle. It's a great shot and beautifully focused.
@golftragic@kporte Thanks so much. She really tried a few times to swallow this fruit in one go and I nearly had heart failure when I watched and she almost managed to swallow it. Luckily she spit it out.
@heidihp@mercuria thanks so much and thanks for the fav Heidi. She is still visiting. Probably found a good food source here as it is so dry at the moment only 10 mm rain in 2 months.
