Tonight we went to a performance of Music of the Guns at Fort Scratchley in Newcastle. It ended with the Australian Army Band playing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture complete with the firing of the Fort Scratchley guns and the pealing of the bells from Newcastle Cathedral, which is near the fort. One extra dramatic effect which wasn't planned though was the rolling in of a thunder storm and the sky was lit up by lightning. Luckily it didn't actually rain for quite a while after we had left though.
This is a photo of Fort Scratchley taken as we were leaving.
A very enjoyable evening. Still very warm and humid now though.
Gorgeous capture of Fort Scratchley! I've been there once before on a school trip and it sure is a place full of interesting history! They told us that they sometimes fire the guns, your very lucky to have been there to see it! You must've also got that storm we got yesterday. Bet it was amazing though! :)
@heidihp@kathiecb@hermann@paulaw@lilminimonka@flyrobin@golftragic@terryliv@angelat@ourrube@jaynspain@eyesmile Sorry for the group reply, but we have only just got power back. About 3 pm yesterday afternoon a massive storm came through Port Stephens and the lower Hunter and caused terrible damage. Trees down all over the place etc. We lost a couple of branches from some of our trees, but nothing more. the power has been off since the storm and we have only just got it back again. (The power pole broke in two) I have a picture of it. I will post it once we are up and running properly.
@jaynspain Power is back now. We have been camping here for the last 24 hours, candles, gas lamps, camping stoves. It has been a bit like the boy scouts. Luckily we are always prepared though. We get extreme weather sometimes in Australia, just part and parcel of living in paradise. ha ha.
