A koel came to call by onewing

A koel came to call

Thanks to everyone for your kind thoughts yesterday. I am pleased to say that I have got my own head back again today. The one I was wearing yesterday really didn't fit as good as my own. It took till quite late in the evening before my headache finally cleared so I haven't been able to catch up on your photos. I will try and catch up a bit tonight.

Today's photo is of a female koel and she came down for a drink in our bird bath. I couldn't get too close because she is very timid, but I was lucky enough to get a couple of shots of her before she flew away again.

What a beauty

This Koel is one very naughty lazy lady - no matter how beautiful she looks. Our famiiy have been staying at our Mallacoota house and there is an immature Koel there being fed by a Red Wattle bird. so Koels are like Cuckoos. How the Wattle birds don't wake up to it and end incubating and raising a huge foreign chick is beyond me.
You did a good job of being quick on the trigger to get these two great shots.

Thought it looked a little like our Shinning Cuckoo..

She is a beautiful looking bird. I'm glad you are feeling better

@ethelperry Thanks Ethel. I agree Koel's really are lazy. I feel sorry for the red wattle bird feeding a chick this size. We have had a male koel appearing in one of our trees for a few weeks calling out for a mate and it looks as though one has turned up now.

A sort of cuckoo. Bird then......I thought for a minute @ethelperry had got the gun out ...ha ha! It is a beauty, the wattle birds must be very maternal, there are always some who get away doing little in life!

She's a beautiful bird. A pity they are cuckoos and I can't feel good about them. Unusual for them to be out in the open. great catch.

Beautiful plumage, great capture Babs :)
January 13th, 2015
@julzmaioro Thanks Julia, this is a female koel, the male is black with a red eye and they are cuckoo family. I pity the poor birds who get one of their eggs in the nest. The chicks are huge.
January 13th, 2015
@salza Thanks Sally. They aren't too popular though as they are cuckoo family and they leave their eggs in other birds nests.
January 13th, 2015
@happypat Ha ha, I think Ethel has got her gun out. Koel's aren't too popular because they dump their eggs on other poor birds and they end up feeding these huge birds.
