Newcastle Station by onewing

Newcastle Station

I thought I'd better post a photo of the 'deceased' station just in case it disappears along with other areas of Newcastle. The rail lines have already been ripped up, but I really hope the station stays.

This is the closest I could get to it as it is all fenced off and I had to take this photo through a break in the mesh fence.
No Marnie @golftragic I didn't get arrested.
@golftragic As I said in the blurb, I didn't get arrested. You are a bad influence encouraging me to follow in your footsteps taking photos through breaks in mesh fences.

David wandered off and left me there though, just in case.

It looks so sad. Well done for taking the photo (and risking arrest and possibly worse ha ha) just in case it does get demolished.
August 14th, 2016
It does look in need of some TLC. Great, if sad, shot
August 14th, 2016
They'll probably turn it into trendy apartments
August 14th, 2016
Sad to see its decline but at least you have captured it for all time, lovely light and colour Babs:)
August 14th, 2016
What a shame, we should be embracing the railway as a way to travel :)
August 14th, 2016
sad sight but important to capture it whilst its still there
August 14th, 2016
Oh, Babs, the things we do for a photo.....Sad, they call it "progress."
August 14th, 2016
I'm sure it's been a very welcoming station in the past - I mean, look at all the seats for weary travellers.
August 14th, 2016
A real sign of the times isn't it, good to record these things before they disappear.
August 14th, 2016
Interesting station!
August 14th, 2016
Yes interesting!
August 14th, 2016
Great capture, composition
August 14th, 2016
So sad to see this station closed. Should be opening more instead of closing them. Great capture through the chain wire.
August 14th, 2016
Very interesting image, we had the same here in the sixties - Beeching cuts, many lines closed :( Hope they keep the station.

http://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/trust/ May be of interest...closed line now run by a Trust.
August 14th, 2016
Sad but things have to keep on changing, nice detail, I like the seats, one would make a nice garden seat don't you think?
August 14th, 2016
Sad that they have closed the station. Hopefully it won't be left to go to wrack and ruin.
August 14th, 2016
I hope the building is put another use. Why is the railway closed? This happened with Beaching in the 60s in GB & they are regretting it now.( You remember Dr Beaching)
August 14th, 2016
Hope they find a new use for the station. Our railroad always try to find a new destanation for it.
August 14th, 2016
It doesn't take a lot of imagination to think of a new use for the station building - I do hope that happens. Those lovely brick arches and station benches surely must stay!
August 14th, 2016
Good idea to get a shot of it before it disappears. I hope they will be able to do something with it.
August 15th, 2016
Shucks Babs, I'd've been baking pdq if you were. How sad about the station. I do hope 'they' aren't going to pull it down to put up more dog-boxes.
August 15th, 2016
@onewing I'm not the only one who does that! Or should I say, 'see what they made me do'?
August 15th, 2016
Great shot of this lovely old building. I hope they don't knock it down - sometime old is better than new when it is all done up.
August 15th, 2016
Beautiful building- I hope they don't tear it down!
August 15th, 2016
Smiled at your comment to Marnie! Interesting to follow your comments about the station and what is happening to it.
August 15th, 2016
Oh wow that's a bit sad... I hope they don't tear it down.
August 15th, 2016
Isn't it sad when previously inhabited places end up lonely
August 15th, 2016
@susiemc Thanks Sue. The things we do for a photo. At least there was no danger of a train coming.
August 15th, 2016
@thistle @deborah63 @pcoulson @hermann @cruiser @happysnaps @quietpurplehaze @jodies @radiogirl @karens54 @365projectorgjenfurj @craftymeg @salza @pyrrhula @mittens @beachdog @loweygrace @kerosene @pixiemac Thanks everyone, I will keep you informed as to what happens to the station. I do hope they keep the building. A lot of Newcastle's history is disappearing for progress of modern high rise apartments and trendy restaurants.

@paulmann The railway has closed apparently because the line crossed the road twice between Hamilton and Newcastle and it blocked the traffic. So now the line stops at Hamilton and the stations of Wickham, Civic and Newcastle have been closed.
They are replacing it with a light rail (tram) which runs up the centre of the road from Hamilton to Newcastle, which of course won't affect car or bus traffic at all. There's logic for you.
If you put Newcastle NSW into Google maps you will see where the rail lines used to go.
I think the developers want to build high rise apartments, office blocks and trendy restaurants along the strip.
Yes I do remember Dr Beeching.
August 15th, 2016
@ivan Thanks Ivan. I remember Beeching in the 60s. Thanks for the link. No chance of restoring this station, they have already ripped up the rail lines.
August 15th, 2016
@helenhall I hope they put the station to use too. It would be so sad to see it go.
August 15th, 2016
@golftragic Thanks Marnie, as I said you are a bad influence. I think the plan for the centre of Newcastle, unfortunately, is a lot of dog boxes. Light rail up the middle of the street and high rise apartment and office blocks 6, 7 8 and 9 storeys high.
August 15th, 2016
@taffy Marnie is definitely a bad influence isn't she. I hope you will bake the cake with a file in it in case we both get arrested.
I will keep everyone informed as to what happens in Newcastle. I think the actual station building will survive, but apartment and office blocks will replace the actual rail line and a light rail will run up the middle of the street.

It would seem such a shame to pull this structure down. I love the ornateness of it - the beautiful decorated metal work, the brickwork and the arches of the windows, so much history there I think. Pity it couldn't be converted into a tourist information centre or something like that..
August 16th, 2016
@onewing typical! Leave you to face the law on your own! It must be past experience kicking in.
August 18th, 2016
That would make a fabulous restaurant.
