I am a bit late posting tonight because I have been out for our regular girlie lunch today and also I had a medical appointment late this afternoon.
As many of you know I have been posting my three favourite paintings from the Archibald Exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery over the last few days.
Now you have seen my favourites, here is the artwork that won the Archibald Prize for 2017.
To be perfectly honest I wouldn't have picked it as a winner although I do quite like contemporary art. It certainly wasn't in my three best choices.
The artist Mitch Cairns was born in Camden, NSW and is a graduate of the National Art School and was the recipient of the 2012 Brett Whitely Travelling Art Scholarship. This is his fourth time in the Archibald Prize.
The subject of this artwork, Agatha Gothe-Snape, is married to Mitch, she is also an artist.
Which of the four paintings I have posted over the last few days would you select as the winning entry?
What an interesting selection of paintings Babs, this one is beautifully capture in lovely detail and colour but if I could hang one on my wall at home the clear winner would be :- The Inner Stillness of Eileen Kramer - Andrew Lloyd Greensmith :)
i'm still liking the Inner Stillness of Eileen Kramer best, although I like all your picks and I do rather like the winning entry too. Sounds like a great exhibition.
Well this is interesting. I could look at it all day long and still not get it :o My fav has been Inner Stillness. Though that was a beautiful painting :)
They are all remarkable, this painting’s style is so different from the others. Perhaps the reason Inner Stillness is the winning painting in everyone’s eyes is because of Eileen herself. I so admire a person of great accomplishments, and she most assuredly is that. My second choice would be Jack Charles. I would love to see this exhibition, thank you so much for sharing it with us.
I wouldn't have chosen this either but I've come to accept that you can never figure judges out. They have their own thought process and judging criteria- and at times it does not seem to match the prospectus of the exhibit whatsoever! At any rate, if I was to choose from the ones you've posted I would have chosen Eileen Kramer by Greensmith. I felt it really captured something about her personality and was presented in a familiar yet still unique way that seemed to match her "essence" (shall we say!). On a more personal, non-artistic, totally off the track way, if my husband painted me this way, I'd say, "Do it over!".
@pcoulson@helenhall@hermann@wenadee@louannwarren@carolmw@ludwigsdiana@suzanne234 I can see why you picked the Eileen Cramer as your favourite. It was a close thing with me too between that one and Jack Charles. I picked Jack as my winning choice because everywhere you went in the room that painting stood out and followed you. Also I saw the TV show with Anh Do painting this picture and really think he captured Jack's soul.
@paul10@kathiecb@henrir@cruiser@olivetreeann@golftragic After seeing so many fabulous finalists at the exhibition I was so surprised to see that the judges chose this one as the winner. This painting didn't even come close in my reckoning. I think the judges were smoking illegal substances when they chose this one over some of the other fabulous paintings in the exhibition.
Going along with Taffy's comment...I immediately thought Picasso when I first viewed this photo. My favorite is Peter Powditch but Eileen Cramer is a very close second. :-)
