I just love this building. The former Wickham Infants School is historically significant as the earliest substantial school building in the area, being constructed in 1892. It is a fine example of a Public School designed in the Romanesque style with Gothic influences. Its contribution to the street is significant and it sits adjacent to the former Wickham School featured in yesterday's photo.
Since the 1980s the building has been associated with the Awabakal Aboriginal Community Co-operative, who recently converted the building for use as office and administration for the Co-operative.
Awabakal’s objectives are centred around providing services in the areas of employment, culture, health, welfare, sport, housing and education to Aboriginal people living throughout the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and Hunter Valley regions.
What a magnificent building and very fine architectural design and features ! In spite of its age it still looks in pristine condition . So glad it is being put to a worthwhile use and no doubt it will be kept to look in this fine condition !
@onewing I can well believe it. I’m appalled at what architectectural monstrosities have been foisted on Melbourne in my lifetime. I’m a very strong supporter of the Club of Rome’s ZPG policy. This country does not need a torrent of immigrants from places unmentionable.
I love the old Heritage one's.
Very cool shot.
