Yesterday I posted a photo of the Forest Sky Pier at Sealy Lookout in Coffs Harbour and today here is a shot of the view from the Sky Pier.
As you can see it was a very hot hazy day and the view isn't as clear as I would have liked it to be, but you can see the harbour at Coffs Harbour and the marina and breakwater. The island off to the left is Muttonbird Island and it is a nature reserve.
I discovered something interesting while we were up at Coffs. Coffs Harbour was originally called Korff's Harbour.
John Korff left Lowestoft in the UK in 1835 for a new life in Australia and set up a shipbuilding company in Sydney.
In 1847, Captain Korff and his crew took shelter from a storm in what is now the harbour and he and his sons went ashore. He named it Korff's Harbour. In 1861 Korff's was spelt incorrectly as
Coff's in a Government gazette and, as a result of this mistake, the area became known as Coffs Harbour.
@kjarn not as good as I thought it would be and not worth the drive up there in my opinion or the cost of building the sky deck there either. There are much nicer lookouts in Australia than this
It is a beautiful view. Interesting history in the name too. Amazing that one typo in the newspaper could change the name firever. The power of the press.
Love to hear the history of this place, it’s akways good to know how names were chosen. A wonderful view Babs....your country! Lots of trees fir shade in that hot sun. Good to see such a large area of that harbour & surrounding country, lovely vantage point.
@rookynook April is a lovely time to visit Australia, a bit like Goldilocks' porridge, not too hot and not too cold. You never know, you may even do a detour to our part of the world at Nelson Bay on your travels. The east coast of Australia is a lovely spot to travel through. On the journey from Sydney to the Gold coast you will be spoilt for choice on places to see and visit.
@happypat Yes, I love to discover the origins of place names in Australia. The area where I live has lots of stories about how the suburbs were named.
