Matryoshka by pandorasecho

Matryoshka

A matryoshka doll (Russian: матрёшка; IPA: [mɐˈtrʲoʂkə] ( listen), matrëška), also known as Russian nesting/nested doll, refers to a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin, who was a folk crafts painter at Abramtsevo estate of the Russian industrialist and patron of arts Savva Mamontov. The doll set was painted by Malyutin. Malyutin's doll set consisted of eight dolls—the outermost was a girl in a traditional dress holding a rooster. The inner dolls were girls and a boy, and the innermost a baby.

I love these. I had a set I bought at EXPO 67 in Montreal but over the years it wore out because my children used to love playing with them. I love how you have them displayed with the sunflower. Beautiful photo!

Beautiful pov, Dixie! I just love these strung out along with the sunflower. Very colorful and playful. I've always been attracted to these nesting dolls. The painting on them is lovely too. Do you leave them out there all of the time? Are they affected by the weather? Great capture.

@karenann @olivetreeann @cimes1 These are really tiny. The whole set on a large pin is a brooch I have a set of USSR leaders I bought in Europe and a couple sets with girls, and a set of old macdonald and the animals but these are very portable and I wanted to pick a same something that could travel to take the kid to college this month

i had the same brooch many years ago back in the old country that a russian woman gave me. i brought it with me when i went to oman but an omani lady so loved it, and i gave it to her. i also had a set of nesting dolls that i left with a friend.

you did a very clever presentation with this; very uniquely engaging. lovely contrasts, too!
