labour day by pandorasecho

labour day

Del Norte County once had something like 17 sawmills and now has none. The Redwoods have become treasured and protected so it is rare to see a log truck these days. I had commented that when we moved here 25 years ago, the 4rth of july parade was filled with log trucks, but there were none this year. Then we see this. There is construction on the highway south of us and a forest fire so I am assuming these came from one or the other.

I wonder if they rescued these logs from a burn area.

big logs. here, the trucks have just started running again since the woods have dried up enough for the men to be able to get out into them without sinking out of sight. the rain this summer really hurt the industry, shutting many yards down for several months. here, the logs go to paper mills in maine, to canada, to new hamshire . all over the place.

@catsmeowb yeah coming from Wyoming I would have thought these were big logs too but here a big log fills the truck four times. You see four in a row each hauling one section of a redwood

@pandorasecho WOW! i guess, in thinking about it after looking at your photos, that makes sense. the truck my husband drives is rated for 100,000# - if he is loaded in the woods, it often gets a bit over loaded but DOT can't really do much about that because there are not scales in the woods. at the log yard, they weigh the truck before it leaves and will take logs off it. but they are very good at eye-balling and know how much to put on. if logs are too big at the mill, the entire load gets rejected - so the drivers really watch out for big logs.

I guess it's hard to strike the balance between preserving our natural resources and making use of them. But I do believe it can be done. It takes a bit of creativity and a lot of know-how. Good shot.
