flames by peadar

flames

Inspired by others on 365, this is my take on it. I couldn't quite get the focus to my liking; if anyone has any advice please do tell and I'll try again another day. Anyway, another one ticked off the list...

Thanks for all your comments and Favs recently, really appreciate it!
That's really cool, Peter. Did you try focussing manually? Using the zoom option in live view mode? I just noticed that you have a 7D, now; congratulations. I'm very jealous!

@damianpowell Damian, yes I was on manual focus, I tried autofocus as well, in the various settings you get on the 7D, none of it seemed to work brilliantly. I'm starting to think I had the gas on too high which was causing the individual flames to dance around too much. I might go back and test that theory anyway. And yes, I LOVE the 7D. I got a great deal from SLRHut online - they ship from New York, but it was a long way cheaper than anything on offer in the UK. Worth investigating!

I think thats fabulous......any day now British Gas will be on the phone offering you a job! Just love the very dark background, clever!!

@fannyb Fanny, that's cheered me up. Funnily enough we had British Gas in here today as our boiler had packed up!!!

Neat shot, Peter. . I don't think I've seen one of these on 365 and it's a good inspiration. AND welcome to my Canon 7d world. . .I know you're going to LOVE it!!

This looks great. I don't see a problem with the focus.

I can't give you any suggestions, but I do can say that I like it very much!

Good effort for a difficult subject. Interesting crop ;)

Your aperture seems too wide to get good focus here on the dancing flames. Since the flames can be translucent, the AF will get fooled. You can try getting the camera on a tripod & focussing manually.

Here is a similar shot I tried last year : http://365project.org/shuttertux/365/2012-05-09

And congrats on the 7D. :-)

Well done, Peter - I like the effect!

@lyno Thank you, Lyn, it is a great camera, I am really enjoying getting to grips with it!

@henrir Thank you, Henri!
@anoeska You are so kind, thank you!
@twocups Thanks, James, all these "easy" shots are surprisingly difficult!
@soboy5 Thank you, Danny!

Hmm - another one I wll try - one day!
January 6th, 2013
@shuttertux Thanks for the comment. The camera was on a tripod, and I tried manual focus and the many autofocus options on the 7D; I had it on timer so camera shake was eliminated. I tried everything!!!
But thanks, anyway :-)

@rvm Rachel, thank you. Be prepared for frustration!!!

Just a thought, how about faster shutter speed? Flames dance
January 6th, 2013
@fannyb Fanny, yep, did that, although I think that is part of the problem. Low ambient light means you are limited at how fast you can get to. One to come back to... (maybe...)

Great shot!

Nice and simple :)
January 6th, 2013
I think you've done really well with this!
January 6th, 2013
Looks good to me! Nice capture, Peter.
January 6th, 2013
Very cool! I wonder if I can force my iPhone to do something even sort of similar. Can't wait for the sun to set so I can try!

I'm still learning so I asked my husband and he suggests: ShutterTux is right, You need more depth of field so less aperture - f11 maybe, but you won't get enough exposure at that. Try f5.6 and 1/50th sec, manual focus and a tripod. Take two shots each focussed on one of the rings and Photoshop them together. VERY tricky subject!

I think this is good as it is Peter, flames are constantly moving and fluid, so a little motion blur adds to that sense! You are ticking shots off your list right, left and centre, well done!

Looks nice!

Very nice. Tried this one and mine looked crappy. I guess because it was too bright in the kitchen. Dark surroundings, like this, is just perfect!

Awesome shot! Love the blue and the glow of the flames! Great DOF
January 7th, 2013
Very cool shot. Love the deep blue flames.

I had the same problem Peter, lousy focus, but just thinking now, how would it be if you began with the lights on then focused on the edge of the metal top before you lit the gas?
January 7th, 2013
@bluefirebucket I'll try that!
January 7th, 2013
I am trying to master flames myself, so no advice ~ just awe at what you have captured ~~ will try @bluefirebucket suggestion though :-)

Really like this, great shot !
