100 Strangers : No. 24 : Christian

A story of caution to be told here....

On the first morning of our recent holiday to Playa de Jandia it was cloudy, so we went a walk along the promenade towards the resort centre.

It was a pleasant walk along the palm tree lined road.

As you get closer to the centre you pass various shop fronts, café’s, supermarket, electrical shops, pharmacy, bar, jewellers, aloe vera , bureau de change, bank, etc. Some a little tacky others quite up market.

I was carrying my Canon 60D hoping to get some streeties.

Christian was stood outside a shop and caught my eye.and addressed me...

"Hola"

"Hola"

"Deutsch / English ?"

"English"

"Ahh very nice camera, I look?"

He holds his hand out.

I hand my Canon 60D over to Christian !

I then start to panic. What on earth have I just done? I have handed my camera over to a total stranger, stood outside a shop in a foreign country.

Christian starts to handle the camera

"Nice, Professional?"

"No"

I reach across and take my camera back.

He points at my filter

"What is filter?"

"UV"

"You want a HD filter? I sell you one"

"No I am OK"

"You want zoom lens / telephoto?"

"No thanks, I have one already"

"Wide Angle?"

"I am OK thank you"

"One minute, I give you my card"

He returns with a business card

"You visit me again and I give you 50% off any item"

He writes -50% on the card.

"Ahh right , thank you very much"

By this time I have calmed down and ask Christian for a portrait and do two quick images

I show Christian the images on the back of the camera.

"Good?"

"Yes"

"What's your name" I ask

"Christian"

I shake Christian's hand

"Remember 50% off" he says.

I never returned to Christian, the weather turned hot and sunny and Iwe never ventured into the resort centre again.

I suppose there is a little lesson to be learned here. Handing my camera over to a stranger was a little stupid. I mean he was stood outside a shop, not inside it , he could have been anyone, a con man maybe.

Anyway he makes it as number 24 in my series. Not the best of shot as the lighting was difficult

Sometimes we flourish despite ourselves. God watches out for fools and children!
Great detail in this portrait. I like the bokeh created by the frame of lights.

thanks allison, this was difficult to get right (and i don't think it is quite right) as there was lots of reflective light @allie912

Phew, it all turned out OK. You're right - he could have been a con man but we all do things without thinking and then wonder. And who knows, maybe if you'd gone back you could have got a bargain with 50% off ;)

Well, maybe all my followers who have been saying I'm brave to do this have a point! I'll certainly make sure to keep tight hold of my camera in all situations. But it turned out OK and you got a nice portrait and still have your camera! (And haven't got a possibly 'dodgy' lens!!)
