CANAL SIDE by phil_howcroft

CANAL SIDE

I'm in my third week on here and this is my third canal picture.

All have been different bits of the canal and all have been photographed using my mobile phone - HTC Desire - while on my luch time walk.

You've not seen this bridge before. The best bit of the picture is the reflection. I knelt down low to get a better angle.

The image looked pretty dull and drab in colour (well it was a grey, damp day), but a conversion to black and white with a high contrast seems to have made the image more interesting.

I've cropped out the white sky above the bridge as this was just distracting and added no interest and this therefore made a letterbox image. People who follow me will know I like a letterbox !

Phil
lol " I like a letterbox"... you sound like a postie :-)

Andy, my dad was a postie and I was a 'student postie' doing the Christmas post when they used to recruit students just before Christmas to cope with the volume of Xmas Cards.

Maybe I like a letterbox, because my images don't fill the frame with interesting bits..maybe it's an easy way to do a picture ! Eeek

Okay; I'm good. I have now determined what a "postie" is. LOL. Phil, I think the reflections are beautiful...crystal clear with the placid water and the light sky. I like the composition. Is that a Weeping Willow toward the back?

@meredithwb Meredith, thanks for your comments. I think it is a Golden Willow as it has a gentle yellow colour even in February (I googled it).

The black and white conversion makes it stand out .

Well spotted Meredith :)

@patsyjphillips Thanks Patsy, I concentrated on the reflections rather than the main subject as the reflections bit always seems more interesting

@dollybeads Thanks Ellen, reflections always make good captures and the weeping willow does add a bit of interest and brightness. Thanks :)

@gill Thanks Gill, your comments are much appreciated. I just noticed you've done a reflection today. Reflections can produce great images

Lovely choice of location and processing. The length of the bridge is emphasized by the letterbox format and the high contrast B&W definitely makes a dramatic composition.
Thanks for your thoughtful comments on my pictures, Phil.

Nice reflection capture and great choice in editing.

@http365proj Shirley, it just goes to show that the camera can lie a bit. The canal is a dirty canal next to a large factory. Depending where you are on the pathway, the water has quite a bit of rubbish in it, bottles, planks, plastic bags etc. It is navigable though, as you get the occassional boat travelling down it ;). Thank you for your comments

@seattle Constance, you are too kind in your comments, although i did go heavy on the contrast to create a B/W with a lot of tones and blacks.
February 19th, 2011
good capture great contrast like the way it leads you under the bridge so whats round that bend
February 19th, 2011
@hobgoblinwychwo thanks John, what's round the bend?...A bit more of the same industrial canal and skyline..a few different bridges and the occassional boat, pedestrian and dog :) . Glad you like it
