This one of my continued series of shots from the front seat of the top deck of the number 58 bus.
The bus is travelling in the Daybrook Area of Nottingham (just outside Arnold) and the view you see is a Derelict pub (bar to none UK viewers) ....The Grove.
The pub has been derelict for about 3 years and the car park behind it is now being used as a car wash location.
All the windows are boarded up and the area is rather run down as all the few shops to the left of the scene are all empty and run down too.
The lone man walking across the frame tends to add a bit a starkness to the scene.
It's quite a sad little scene of England in 2012
The roof of the pub is frost bound as the daytime temperatures dip below zero !
Wow! This shot and your narration are very depressing, Phil! It's a sad time all over what's left of the free world and I won't get on my soapbox as to why. This is an historical shot! Save it for future generations and pray people will learn before it's too late for the rest of us.
An all too common sight these days .. some say the smoking ban started the demise of lots of pubs .. and the credit crunch has just added to the problem. Plenty of pubs round here have closed down, and have then been knocked down (or turned in to Sainbury's locals, etc!)
It never got above freezing here all day .. brrrrr ..
Cheap car wash in your area Phil !! They were queueing 6 deep when I passed our hand wash today & that was £5 a go ! A lot of derelict businesses, we have The Blue Anchor pub deserted & rotting away near J3 M55. I wish they would knock it down & make it tidy. That man walking across your banner shows the scale well !
It's sad to see old places go that at one time were quite regal. Yes, the lone figure really adds to the picture and you've got me wondering how you're always catching these people that add interest! Thanks for the story about the shot.
It is a forlorn building, but the cheery yellow sign perks up the whole scene. Glad someone found a way to run a business there. I'm betting his expenses are minimal.
@seattle cheers constance, our cities and towns do have run down areas....i think the photo and my narrative exaggerates this scene a bit, but it is not a nice welcome to the area
@marlboromaam thanks Maggie, I don't mind you getting on your soapbox :) ....you are right though street photography like this is social history :)...many thanks for your continued support
Oh I could post our local ex-Texaco garage and make this place look positively ravishing. The man looks tiny against that sign. Poor guys doing hand car washing in the freezing weather...
