Back Streets of Arnold

This is a shot of a back street in Arnold

I don't know what you call them in your part of the world / country...alleyway, twitchell, ginnel or just a back street

Two elderly ladies walk down the street and are greeted by another lady putting her wheelie bin out.

I did the shot in monochrome to give it a more urban gritty feel, but I think the elderly ladies give it a more tranquil almost homely feeling.

I did another shot 'zoomed in more', but I then lost the foreground shadows through the fence ...and i like the foreground shadows :)
We call them weinds in Garstang but all of these narrow passages are so fascinating in towns & villages I think. Love that you have picked up these two older ladies with their white hair & walking sticks, you can just imagine them having a good old chin wag !!! Perfect in Black & white of course too !

Wonderful composition. Love the perspective, the shadows and the two walkers. Beautiful clouds and sun. I'm marking this a fav.

What @happypat said and then some! Love the light and shadows, Phil! Great capture and it does have a very homey feel. Very nice black and white, too!

I love your monochromes Phil. This one has so much character. The longer I look at it the more there is to see.

Ah. This is how it should be done! And I am beginning to learn that b/w is quite an intuitive thing. I really like this shot, the ladies, the shadows and the sky, the perspective.

Down our way we call them "jitties" (sing. jitty). In Liverpool I've heard them called "entries". Amazing how the same thing gets to be called so many different names within one country and in the same language. Although to be fair, geordie could be considered a different dialect! ;-)

@tishpics If you want to really experiement and have fun with B&W Patricia try doing a few "channel mix" shots. I came to really prefer that form of B&W conversion to simpler forms like desaturating the shot. I'll dig out a few of my efforts if you like but here's one I've sold a few prints of...

This is a HDR colour shot converted to B&W by channel mixing.

Love it! It's a ginnel in Preston but a twitten in Sussex where my mum and dad moved to. It's great that we still have some regional words!
