100 Strangers : Round 2 : No. 187 : Clemie

On Saturday we went to Nottingham city centre. Jane went to do some shopping. I nipped to Sneinton Vegan Market as I’d been there at the start of the year and got a good stranger photo.

At the market I met Clemie who had a stall full of beautiful home made Vegan cakes . Clemie had a prime location in the middle of the market, although it could be argued that most stalls had prime locations as they were all nicely spread out in the market area.

I asked Clemie if she had studied the art of confectionery to produce such a nice array of cakes. Clemie told me she was self taught and had been running her business for about 3 years.

Prior to starting her business Clemie was a primary school teacher in several schools in Nottingham. I told her both my daughters were secondary school teachers. We both agreed that teaching , especially at inner city schools presented many challenges.

As well as having a stall, Clemie also has a shop in Hucknall, a web site that supports online shopping and she supplies cafe’s and shops.

Clemie agreed to a shoot straight away, she said that the market sometimes sees Photography Students from Nottingham Trent University visiting to take pictures.

I couldn’t ask her to leave her stall, so I took the photo of her while she was behind her stall. The coloured bokeh you see is some graffiti on the old fruit market buildings and the shapes in the white sky are a burnt out roof in the same said buildings

Thank you for letting me take your picture Clemie, good luck in your confectionery career.

Photo edited in Darktable and GIMP.

You did a great job of making her "pop" from the background. My daughter sold her pastries and cakes at farmers markets before she had a son. It was hard work with all the uncertainty of weather and lugging her equipment from home. She made some good friends, but I think she was glad she could stop when Jack came along.
