Mika’s stranger story is very similar to stranger 231, Marina, as Mika and Marina were shopping together in Nottingham when I met them.
Mika is a student at Nottingham Trent University, andshe is studying modern languages.
Mika is Greek and was shopping with Marina who was Cypriot.
I shot Marina first and then Mika. When Mika told me her name I asked her to spell it for me, “M I K A” she said…. “Ah as in the singer?” I said. Mika said “Yes that’s right”. Maybe she was being polite to me as it is probably 13 years since Mika had his hit songs, which would probably have been when Mika wasn’t even 10 years old !!!
Mika struck up quite a pose for me, giving the “peace sign” on all her photos? I rarely direct my strangers, other than telling them where to stand and look, so whether they smile or not is up to them.
I decided mono was a good way to present the photo of Mika as it added a bit of an edge to her peace sign.
That’s it for Mika’s story, thank you for being stranger 232, good luck with your studies. It is going to be a difficult year being a student during a pandemic.
Great fir these two girls to meet & get together. I wonder if they met at uni....I had no idea there were so many foreign students here studying...mind you I know nothing about uni life! Great shot....both pretty girls, I hope they are coping with life during these uncertain times!
I think that sign has become something of a meaningless reflex action by people when they have their photos taken but, as you say, it was her choice and you are, of course, respectful of that. That choice is part of who she is and that's what portraits are about, after all. Well done.
