ready for the Wayfarer's Dole

Every visitor to the almshouses at St Cross, Winchester is entitled to ask, at the Porter's Lodge, for the Wayfarer's Dole: a piece of bread and a small beaker of ale. The ale offered is currently Fuller's. Ray said it was good.

I see that in the last 8 days I've had 6 photos reach PP. I think there must be something wrong with the algorithms - or my arithmetic! But thank you so much everyone for all your support, interest and encouragement.
Nice shot Hazel and congrats on all the PP's.
I have not had much chance to look through shots lately, I will go and have a look now.

Can you go more than once a day to claim your ale and crust?

@will_wooderson

I think not - if they 'sussed' you out! I was told that the local gentlemen of the road do sometimes make use of the facility - which is a sad thought I think.

I don't know what the Wayfarer's Dole is, but assuming it is a religious event? Only because I seen the cross on the board. Is that something like Communion that the Catholic's recieve? Their's is bread and wine. FAV!

I thought the PP was photos, chosen by a few, as the most Popular of Photos Posted? I knew the trending page is an algorithm, but thought the PP was different? I haven't been here long enough to know yet!! Anyway, I think if you had 6 photos on the PP then they belonged there!!

@cashew

The Wayfarer's Dole was started by a monk in Cluny, France as sustenance for travellers. St Cross takes the Jerusalem Cross as its 'emblem' but is a secular, not a religious order. There's a bit more information here http://www.cityofwinchester.co.uk/history/html/st_cross.html

It's my understanding that both TP and PP photos are chosen by algorithms but that Ross himself chooses the photos for TT (Top Twenty) each week but I could stand to be corrected. @scrivna

Thanks for your visit and comments!
