Of all the birds who come to the feeder, the starlings are the most gregarious - and the most argumentative.

Yesterday I saw a little rat about to scurry off with a dropped piece of fat ball. It would be a shame to stop feeding the birds but.....
A lovely shot capturing their gregarious character -- and fun to watch these intelligent little birds ! -- but the rat is another matter -- yet they say there is always a rat within a few hundred yards to you . !!

@beryl We have the same issue, Hazel. I decided to move the feeders further away from the house, especially as windows and doors are often left open at this time of year. Worth putting up with (as long as it doesn't become out of control) for the joy are seeing the birds. This is a super action shot, Fav

@beryl @yrhenwr

We have a stream just beyond the bird feeder. The only consolation about the rats so far is that they are small - so far!

A rat eeek. That is scary haze. We don't tend to feed the birds in summer , other than the odd piece of fruit thrown onto the ground. We do however keep our bird bath topped up and the birds love a drink and bath ☺

I'm used to getting up in the morning and finding a dead mouse on my doorstep as a gift from one of my cats. The day I found a small rat, my reaction was the same as yours. Somehow, mice I take in stride, rats are a different matter all together.

@gardencat

I understand - and squirrels, no problem!

I do love the markings on those feathers. I'm very fond of starlings, but they do make mess. You have to accept that rats like the dropped bird food.

Wonderful capture such interesting birds to watch and they always bring the whole family and all their relations with them to the garden. I would be a bit worried about the rat in the garden you need the Pied Piper.
