(l to r clockwise) This passage at the cathedral is called a slype. It was cut through the southern buttress by Bishop Curle in 1630s to stop the constant use of the south aisle and nave as a thoroughfare by the townspeople.
I can't help but notice that it's only one letter different from skype (?!)
I also found online: "akin to Dutch dialectal slijpe, secret path"
Bollard themed Kandinsky.
The war memorial outside the cathedral dwarfs the tall chimneys of the houses.
@granny7 LInda, thank you for your comments. I'm surely going to be in Winchester again to take some more photos before too long as it's such a beautiful place with lots of character and I've hardly begun to photograph Winchester Cathedral. Did you see this which explains about the decorated bollards http://365project.org/quietpurplehaze/365/2012-07-08
also in this album if you go back a couple of days, there are more pics of Winchester - I love the place.
Oh Hazel the "slype" is incredible. I love the shadows, and your gaze being lead to the green door at the end. The other 2 frames complete your collage beautifully.
@creativeamateur thank you. The main facade of the cathedral is hard to capture as the top tends to get lost in the sky but the other views of it are interesting, must go inside soon as photography for personal use is allowed.
Excellent shot of the slype, with the repeating pattern of shadows. Kandinsky is another of my favourites so thank you for that!! I like the way you have got the war memorial pointing skywards, nice pov! Interesting and well shot collage.
