....is the only surviving part of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital, Netley. The hospital was established in the aftermath of the Crimean War, the foundation stone being laid by Queen Victoria in 1856.
Wounded soldiers also came here from the Boer War, and World Wars 1 and 2.
In Jan 1944 the main block was give over to U.S. forces and thousands of American soldiers returning from D-Day were treated here. The hospital reverted to the British Army in July 1945.
In 1963, the interior of the hospital was badly damaged and it was demolished in 1966, the decision being made at the last minute to save the chapel, which is now a museum.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
Lovely looking old building and nice collage. Funny to think that this was found in the aftermath of the Crimean War and considering the possiblity of another war there at the moment
Lisa, I'm really glad I posted it now. It was hard to choose a shot of the chapel and I wanted to show different facades.
It is a strange coincidence but I've come to the conclusion that man never learns and there will always - sadly - be war.
